iPortfolio Activity B - reflection

When I first started in this unit I had thought about what it would be like to work as a medical scientist but I had never thought about what it meant to be a health professional.  It is far more complex than I had imagined and I can see that everything we do from the way we write a report to how we work with other colleagues can have an impact not only on ourselves but also the client, our employer and the whole health service. Explaining why I chose to dolaboratory medicine to the other students in my group was a really worthwhile exercise because it helped me clarify my thinking on this and I learned a little more about myself in the process. How will I keep working on analysing my own thoughts, behaviours, values and attitudes so I can be the most effective professional I can be?

It has been really interesting learning about the other professions who make up a health care team.  Now that I know more about what they do I have a better understanding of how my profession is similar and different to theirs. It has been most surprising to learn how much we all have in common. Even though we have different knowledge and skills that make us a good speech pathologist or physiotherapist or whatever there are lots of things that we all require like good communication, good team working, practicing ethically, etc.  This was reinforced when I looked at the code of ethics for my profession and for two other professions as there was a lot of overlap.

I think one of the most important things that I learned in this unit was what being client centred means and how important this is to delivering safe, high quality health services. I used to think that to being a good health professional meant knowing what was best for the client and “fixing” them. That is not what it means at all. I am now learning to listen much more carefully to others so that I really understand what they are saying.  I want to work in partnership with my clients so I can share what I know with them so they can make the best decision about their own health.  I also need to learn to work in partnership with the other health professionals so that we refer to each other when that is appropriate or we work closely together when that is best for the client. I need to work more on developing my understanding of other cultures too. It was good to have two students in my group who were from overseas as I learned a lot about they often approach things in a different way to what the Australian students did.  I hope that the units we are doing next semester will help me with this and also help me to keep developing my understanding of what it is to be truly professional.

Reflection on IPE Group Oral Presentation

Reflection on IPE Group Oral Presentation

I presented my IPE group oral presentation for FPHP 100 with Angela Whitehead and Sarah Stone. Prior to working on this presentation I had not worked with these students before as we are all new to our courses. Once we had our case study we met weekly and allocated tasks and what we would speak about. I enjoyed working with Angela and Sarah, they were well organised and I felt we contributed equally to the assessment. We each needed to do a particular part of the research and bring this back to the group for discussion and debate. We then prepared our slides which Angela assembled together using the same design. We rehearsed our finished presentation once before we presented to the class, due to time constraints this is all we could manage, however ideally there should have been more rehearsals.

I was satisfied with the feedback our group receieved and I received individually. It was interesting to see the peer feedback reflected some of the items the tutor indicated were good or needed improving and I will continue to practice my oral presentation skills over the course of my degree so that I can continue to present professionally once I have graduated.
